But at the beginning of the century, the large, white house sat near a historic art deco movie theater. There's no longer any evidence of Smith Hospital today. Shortly after, she and her husband moved to Poplar Bluff - which sits in the southwest corner of the state - and opened Smith Hospital. Originally born in Iowa, Smith graduated from osteopathic school in Kirksville, Missouri, in 1902. Doctor Annie Smith was a real physician in the early 1900s. Most of these details were total fabrications.īut they are rooted in some truth.

Rumor had it Doc Annie was building an abortion clinic at her now-abandoned property just outside town she supposedly kept babies in jars of formaldehyde and threw fetuses in her well. “A group of us as teenagers would go out there and tell ghost stories about abortions and dead babies and all kinds of macabre things,” a local resident told KBIA's podcast Show Me The State in 2019. If you were around Poplar Bluff in the 1970s, you might have heard a tale about a mysterious witch-like woman known as “Doc Annie.”Īs high schoolers told it, she was infamous for performing abortions. (It is not much of a step over the Cape Mall.) My kids do want to go again and hit the arcade ($20 for unlimited games.all day!) so I am sure we will return when we are in the area again.Courtesy of Kati Ray Doctor Annie Smith graduated from the American School of Osteopathy in Kirksville, Missouri, in 1902.

I was not nearly as impressed as I thought I would be with the Chesterfield Mall. I thought in a city of this size and with so many potential shoppers that the mall would be open longer (or at least until 9pm). It was just before 8pm (the mall stays open until 9pm) and half of the stores that had been open were closed for the day. We returned later because my sons decided they wanted to buy a couple of books. After eating lunch (we at at Subway.where the veggies were not looking very fresh) we headed back to the hotel. The reviews I had read were correct There are a lot of vacant stores in there! My sons and I only went in a couple of the ones that were open (for books, games, etc.) while my wife checked out a few clothing stores. The mall was well within walking distance of our room at the Hyatt so we decided to try it out.
